  • Mamata Banerjee denied offering money to the family of the deceased doctor and stated she only discussed compensation in line with a court order.
  • Banerjee emphasized that her visit to the victim’s family was to offer support and discuss potential memorial actions, not financial aid.
  • She expressed a desire to resolve the issue through discussion rather than taking action against individuals.
  • Banerjee claimed Kolkata Commissioner of Police Vineet Kumar Goyal wanted to resign due to the situation and emphasized the need for effective law and order management.
  • The BJP has called for Banerjee’s resignation and an impartial probe into the allegations, including a polygraph test.
  • Banerjee alleged that the ongoing protests were part of a conspiracy by the Centre and CPI-M and criticized the Reclaim the Night movement for creating disturbances.
  • The Supreme Court flagged procedural irregularities in the postmortem report, including missing paperwork and improper preservation of evidence.
  • Chief Justice Chandrachud questioned the absence of a mandatory “challan” form and demanded explanations from the CBI regarding these lapses.
  • Kapil Sibal, representing the Bengal government, requested additional time to address the missing paperwork and informed the court of ongoing issues due to doctors’ strikes.
  • The Supreme Court directed the CBI to submit a fresh status report on the investigation by September 18, 2024, to address the concerns raised during the hearing.
