West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee has dedicated the foundation day of her party’s student wing, the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), to the victim of a recent rape-murder case in Kolkata. This significant gesture highlights the deep impact of the tragedy on both Mamata Banerjee and the local community.
Mamata Banerjee took to social media to express her profound sadness over the brutal death of a 31-year-old doctor who was raped and murdered on August 9. Her post on X (formerly Twitter) read, “Today I dedicate Trinamool Chhatra Parishad Foundation Day to our sister, whom we mourn the tragic loss of at RG Kar Hospital a few days ago. Our heartfelt condolences to the family of the sister who was brutally tortured to death. We are seeking speedy justice for her and for all women across India subjected to such inhumane acts. We are deeply sad.”
The heinous crime has sparked nationwide outrage, with protests erupting across the country. Junior doctors have gone on strike, refusing to attend to non-emergency patients as they demand justice for the victim and improved safety measures for women in hospitals. This has created a significant disruption in healthcare services, highlighting the severity of the public’s response to the tragedy.
Mamata Banerjee’s dedication comes amidst growing tensions in the state. On the same day, protests organized by the unregistered student body Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj and the dissident employee group Sangrami Joutha Mancha called for the Chief Minister’s resignation. The demonstrations, which included a march to the state secretariat Nabanna, were marked by significant unrest. Despite police efforts to control the situation with batons and tear gas, the protests continued to surge.
Adding to the controversy, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has supported a 12-hour bandh (strike) today, accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress of mishandling the situation and prompting further unrest. The BJP has alleged that the march was orchestrated with opposition backing to undermine the state government.
In light of the ongoing turmoil, Mamata Banerjee’s dedication of the TMCP Foundation Day is seen as both a tribute to the victim and a statement of solidarity with those affected by the violence. The tragedy has not only shaken the state but also intensified calls for justice and reform, emphasizing the urgent need for action to address violence against women.
