During a recent campaign rally in Janjgir-Champa, Chhattisgarh, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his focus on Muslims in discussions about population control. Mallikarjun Kharge accused Modi of leveraging communal rhetoric to distract from the opposition’s potential majority in the upcoming elections.

Addressing supporters while campaigning for Shivkumar Dahariya, the Congress candidate from Janjgir-Champa, Mallikarjun Kharge argued that the poor tend to have more children due to economic conditions, questioning why the discussion was focused solely on Muslims. “Poor people have (more) children as they do not have wealth. But why do you (Modi) only keep talking about Muslims? Muslims belong to this country,” he stated, emphasizing the need for inclusive nation-building.

Mallikarjun Kharge also responded to Modi’s allegations at a Rajasthan rally that the Congress, if elected, would redistribute wealth to those with more children and “infiltrators.” Modi had referenced a comment by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh regarding Muslims’ claim on resources, which Mallikarjun Kharge countered by questioning Modi’s divisive focus on Hindu-Muslim issues.

The Congress president dismissed Modi’s claims that Congress would seize personal assets like women’s mangalsutra as baseless, highlighting Congress’s long tenure in power without such actions. He accused Modi of lying and misleading the public for political gain.

Further, Mallikarjun Kharge criticized Modi’s governance, particularly his management of the demonetization and the COVID-19 pandemic, suggesting that Modi’s policies had caused widespread harm rather than development, which he contrasted with the achievements of past Congress leaders who established major industries and social reforms in India.

The rally comes ahead of the May 7th polls in Janjgir-Champa, with Mallikarjun Kharge framing the election as crucial for preserving India’s democracy and Constitution against what he sees as the BJP’s detrimental policies.
