In a strategic move poised to shape the Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024, the Mahayuti government has rolled out the Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana, a financial empowerment scheme aimed at uplifting two crore women across Maharashtra. Launched on August 17, coinciding with the Raksha Bandhan festival, this initiative seeks to foster self-sufficiency by providing each beneficiary with a monthly sum of ₹1,500.
Since its inception, the scheme has disbursed five installments, totaling ₹7,500 per recipient. Although critics have labeled it a last-minute election strategy, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the driving force behind the program, remains steadfast in his commitment to its goals. Addressing the criticism, Fadnavis hinted at a potential increase in the monthly support to ₹3,000, underscoring the government’s focus on long-term financial independence for women.
The roots of the scheme draw inspiration from similar programs pioneered by the late Mr. Manohar Parrikar, which have been successfully implemented in other states. Beneficiaries in Maharashtra have reportedly leveraged these funds to launch small businesses and support family needs, contributing to the local economy and showcasing the program’s potential impact.
The government has allocated ₹46,000 crore in the current budget to maintain the scheme’s continuity, ensuring its protection from political shifts. Further strengthening its commitment, the administration has arranged advance payments to avoid disruptions during the election period, a move confirmed by Women and Child Welfare Minister Aditi Tatkare, who affirmed the scheme’s permanence as part of the state’s commitment to women’s welfare.
While opposition leaders have criticized the timing and called it a vote-bank tactic, positive feedback from beneficiaries paints a different picture. Many have applauded the scheme’s timely assistance and its potential to drive social and economic change. As elections draw near, the Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana has become a pillar of the Mahayuti government’s electoral strategy, signaling a commitment to women’s empowerment that could be key in securing voter trust in the Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024.
