Fear of possible cooking gas shortages has triggered an unexpected surge in the demand for electric kitchen appliances across India. Consumers worried about potential disruptions in LPG supply have rushed to online marketplaces and quick commerce platforms to purchase alternative cooking solutions such as induction cooktops, electric pressure cookers and rice cookers. The sudden spike in demand has resulted in record sales for e commerce companies including Flipkart and Amazon, while quick delivery platforms such as Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart and Zepto have reportedly run out of stock for several popular models. Industry executives say the surge reflects a wave of panic buying triggered by reports of LPG supply pressure amid the ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The possibility of disruptions in global energy supply chains has led many households to explore backup cooking options, resulting in an unprecedented rise in demand for electric kitchen appliances.
Panic Buying Drives Unprecedented Online Appliance Sales
E commerce platforms across India have reported a massive surge in demand for kitchen appliances over the past two days. According to representatives from major online retailers, the sales of induction cooktops have increased dramatically as consumers rush to secure alternative cooking solutions. An Amazon India spokesperson revealed that induction cooktop sales surged by nearly 30 times compared with regular sales levels during the same period earlier. Other appliances have also seen a significant increase in demand. Electric pressure cookers and rice cookers recorded approximately four times higher sales than usual, while appliances such as air fryers and multi use electric kettles experienced nearly double their normal daily demand. Industry analysts say the surge reflects a precautionary response by households concerned about cooking gas availability. Consumers appear to be preparing for potential supply disruptions by purchasing appliances that allow them to cook using electricity instead of LPG. Retailers report that most purchases are coming from urban households that previously relied primarily on LPG cylinders for cooking but are now considering electric alternatives as a backup option. Experts believe that the fear of sudden LPG shortages has played a key role in driving this consumer behaviour. Many people have been influenced by reports of long queues at gas agencies and concerns about the impact of international conflict on energy supplies. As a result, consumers are increasingly looking for solutions that can ensure uninterrupted cooking at home.
Quick Commerce Platforms and Local Retailers Witness Massive Demand
The surge in appliance sales is not limited to traditional e commerce websites. Quick commerce platforms that offer rapid delivery services have also reported extraordinary demand for electric cooking devices. Companies such as Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart and Zepto have seen a dramatic rise in orders for induction cooktops and other electric kitchen appliances. According to industry executives, some platforms experienced sales growth of nearly 10 times compared with their regular daily volumes. In several cities, the sudden spike in demand caused popular models of induction cooktops to sell out quickly, leaving many platforms temporarily out of stock. Tata Group owned online grocery platform BigBasket also recorded a sharp rise in demand for induction cooktops. Company officials said sales increased by nearly five times within a short period. The company has even revised its monthly sales projections, estimating that demand could reach three times its earlier forecast. Physical retail stores have also witnessed a noticeable increase in customer interest. Retailers dealing in kitchen appliances say they have seen a surge in walk in customers searching for electric cooking solutions. A shop owner in Connaught Place in New Delhi reported that more than 200 customers visited his store in a single day to inquire about induction cooktops and related appliances. Additionally, hundreds of potential buyers contacted the store through phone calls asking about product availability and prices. According to the retailer, earlier these appliances were mostly purchased by commercial establishments such as restaurants and catering businesses. However, the current surge shows that households are now buying them in large numbers due to fears of LPG supply disruption.
Rising LPG Concerns and Price Pressure Behind Consumer Shift
The surge in appliance sales has coincided with growing concerns about LPG availability in several parts of the country. Reports from different states have indicated that consumers are facing difficulties obtaining cooking gas cylinders due to increased demand and supply pressures. In some regions, long queues have been seen outside LPG distribution agencies as consumers attempt to secure additional cylinders. The situation has also led to reports of black marketing in certain areas. In some states, domestic LPG cylinders that normally cost around ₹918 have reportedly been sold in the black market for prices as high as ₹1800. Commercial LPG cylinders have seen even higher price spikes in some locations, reaching approximately ₹4000 for a 19 kilogram cylinder in illegal markets. Such developments have further intensified public concern about cooking gas availability. As a result, many households are exploring alternative cooking methods that rely on electricity instead of LPG. Induction cooktops have emerged as the most popular option because they are relatively affordable and easy to use. Entry level induction cooktops typically cost around ₹1200 to ₹2000, while advanced models with higher power and additional features can cost more than ₹9000. Electric pressure cookers and rice cookers have also become popular alternatives. Prices for electric pressure cookers generally range from ₹3500 to ₹14000 depending on capacity and smart cooking features. Air fryers, which can also be used for certain cooking functions, range from approximately ₹2500 to more than ₹15000 for premium models. Hotels and restaurants have also begun shifting to electric cooking appliances in some cities where commercial LPG supply has become restricted. Industry experts say the current surge in appliance sales highlights how geopolitical events can influence consumer behaviour and household purchasing decisions. While authorities have assured that LPG supplies remain stable in most regions, the perception of possible shortages has already triggered a wave of precautionary buying. Market observers believe that appliance sales may remain high in the coming weeks as consumers continue to look for backup cooking options. Whether the demand surge will stabilize depends largely on public confidence in the stability of LPG supply chains. If consumers receive consistent reassurance about fuel availability, panic buying may gradually decline. However, the recent surge clearly demonstrates how quickly consumer markets can react to global developments affecting energy supplies.
