On Monday, Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position as Prime Minister of Bangladesh and fled the country due to escalating political chaos. The crisis, which began with protests against job quotas and evolved into widespread demonstrations demanding her resignation, turned violent with significant loss of life. Sheikh Hasina’s departure is a notable addition to a list of prominent leaders who have fled their countries amidst severe political upheaval. Here are some other significant examples:

  • Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka: Served as President from November 2019 to July 2022. His presidency was marked by severe economic crisis and public unrest. Fled to the Maldives and then to Singapore in July 2022 before resigning.

  • Suharto, Indonesia: Served as President until 1998. Resigned amid massive protests and a financial crisis, marking a significant moment in Indonesia’s political history as he fled due to mounting pressure.
  • Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Tunisia: President from 1987 to 2011. Fled to Saudi Arabia in January 2011 during the Tunisian Revolution, which led to his ousting.
  • Ferdinand Marcos, Philippines: President from 1965 to 1986. Ousted by the People Power Revolution and fled to Hawaii in February 1986.
  • Manuel Noriega, Panama: Military leader and de facto ruler from 1983 to 1989. Fled to the Vatican’s embassy in Panama City during the U.S. invasion and was later arrested and brought to the U.S.
  • Mobutu Sese Seko, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo): Ruled from 1965 to 1997. Fled to Morocco in May 1997 as rebels led by Laurent-Désiré Kabila took over the country.
