Questions are being raised about Delhi’s law and order, and this issue is likely to play a key role in the upcoming assembly elections. Rising crime rates, violence against women, traffic jams, and cyber crime are persistent challenges for both the public and the administration. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), holding the central government responsible for shortcomings in law enforcement, as Delhi Police operates under the central government.
The increase in murders, gang wars, robberies, and other criminal incidents in Delhi has heightened a sense of insecurity among the public. Although the Ministry of Home Affairs has issued strict directives to Delhi Police to curb crime, the desired improvement at the ground level is yet to be seen. Experts believe that greater integration of technology in policing, such as drones, data analytics, and advanced software, can help control crime. Additionally, stabilizing the tenure of police officers and reducing political interference are crucial for strengthening law enforcement.
Crimes against women remain one of the biggest challenges for Delhi Police. Many female victims hesitate to approach police stations to file complaints. Although the Ministry of Home Affairs has repeatedly advised Delhi Police to become more public-friendly, concrete measures for women’s safety are urgently needed.
Traffic jams are another severe issue in the capital. The city’s traffic police force consists of only 7,000 personnel, which is far below the city’s requirements. The lack of adequate police deployment at major intersections has made traffic congestion a common problem.
Cyber crime cases are also rising sharply. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ portal receives nearly 8,000 complaints daily. A lack of awareness and the swift actions of cyber criminals pose a significant threat to the public. From digital fraud to investment scams, both stringent enforcement and widespread public awareness are essential.
A shortage of police personnel further weakens Delhi’s law enforcement capabilities. The current strength of Delhi Police is below 90,000, whereas the city requires over 200,000 officers. Many personnel are assigned to VIP security, leaving minimal presence on the streets.
This issue is expected to intensify during elections, with all political parties attempting to capitalize on it. The public continues to hope for improved law and order, ensuring a safe and fearless environment for everyone.
