Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen finished as runner-up at the prestigious All England Open 2026 after suffering a defeat to Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chun-Yi in the men’s singles final held in Birmingham on March 8. Sen lost the summit clash 15-21, 20-22 in a closely contested match that lasted 57 minutes.
Despite putting up a determined fight, the Indian shuttler was unable to overcome the consistency and sharp attacking play of his opponent. The result meant Sen had to settle for the silver medal while Lin Chun-Yi secured one of the biggest titles of his career.
Lin Chun-Yi’s victory also marked a historic moment for Chinese Taipei badminton, as he became the first men’s singles player from the country to win the All England Open title. The tournament is considered one of the most prestigious events in international badminton and often referred to as the sport’s unofficial world championship.
For Lakshya Sen, reaching the final once again highlighted his consistency at the highest level. The Indian player had also reached the final of the All England Open in 2022 but lost that title match to former world number one Viktor Axelsen of Denmark.
In the opening game of the 2026 final, Sen appeared slightly slow to settle into his rhythm. Lin Chun-Yi quickly capitalized on this by dictating the pace of the rallies. The Chinese Taipei player consistently targeted Sen’s lifts and returns, creating opportunities to attack with sharp cross-court shots.
Sen attempted to extend the rallies and force errors from Lin, but he struggled to maintain depth in his defensive shots during the early phase of the match. Lin used these openings effectively and managed to secure the first game 21-15.
The second game began with a much stronger response from the Indian shuttler. Knowing he needed to win the game to stay in contention, Sen increased the pace of the rallies and adopted a more aggressive approach.
Initially, the game remained evenly balanced. However, Sen soon gained momentum and surged ahead. At one stage, he converted a narrow 4-3 lead into a commanding 9-4 advantage, putting Lin under pressure.
Lin Chun-Yi, however, showed remarkable composure and resilience. Gradually regaining control of the rallies, he began closing the gap and forced several errors from Sen. The match became increasingly tense as both players exchanged points in a tight battle during the closing stages of the second game.
With the score approaching the decisive moments, Lin earned his first match point at 20-19. Sen managed to save that match point with a determined rally, keeping his hopes alive in the contest.
However, Lin remained calm under pressure and secured the title on the second match point, sealing a straight-games victory and clinching the championship.
Lakshya Sen’s journey to the final had been impressive throughout the tournament. The Indian shuttler displayed strong form in earlier rounds, defeating several top opponents to reach the championship match.
His performance at the All England Open once again demonstrated his ability to compete at the highest level of world badminton. Sen has been one of India’s leading players in men’s singles in recent years and continues to represent the country strongly on the international circuit.
Although he fell short in the final, winning the silver medal at one of the sport’s most prestigious tournaments remains a significant achievement. His consistent performances in major events have also strengthened India’s presence in global badminton competitions.
Lin Chun-Yi’s victory further underlined the growing strength of badminton players from Chinese Taipei. Having already won the India Open Super 500 title earlier this year, Lin has now added the All England Open title to his list of achievements.
The win is expected to boost Lin’s global ranking and establish him as one of the top contenders in men’s singles badminton.
For Lakshya Sen, the focus will now shift to upcoming international tournaments as he continues his pursuit of major titles. His runner-up finish at the All England Open is likely to motivate him further as he prepares for future competitions on the badminton circuit.
