The tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has ignited widespread protests and calls for justice across India. In response to this horrifying incident, the Resident Doctors’ Associations (RDAs) in Delhi have announced a significant protest march scheduled for August 16. The march will commence at 2 PM from Nirman Bhavan in the National Capital. This decision follows a comprehensive meeting among representatives from various RDAs, including those from AIIMS Delhi, SJH, and MAMC, who unanimously agreed on the necessity of the protest.
In solidarity with the Kolkata protests, the Delhi Medical Association (DMA) has also planned a candle march at India Gate, set to start at 5 PM on August 16. DMA President-elect Dr. Girish Tyagi expressed deep concern over the incident, condemning it as “shameful” and affirming the association’s support for the victim and her family. Additionally, Dr. Tyagi announced a 24-hour strike from 6 AM on August 17 to 6 AM on August 18, which will also impact emergency services in subsequent phases if necessary.
DMA President Dr. Alok Bhandari echoed these sentiments, stressing the collective outrage among the medical community. He criticized the government’s lack of response and warned of further public demonstrations if effective measures are not taken.
On August 9, the horrific assault and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor led to immediate and intense backlash from the medical community. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a nationwide withdrawal of medical services, also scheduled from 6 AM on August 17 to 6 AM on August 18. The protests have seen support from various sectors, including the Bengali film and television industry, with actress Alivia Sarkar joining the calls for justice at RG Kar Medical College.
