Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 14 (ANI): The West Bengal Police brought Sanjoy Roy, the alleged accused in the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor, to the Central Government Offices (CGO) Complex in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Following an order from the Calcutta High Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case and dispatched a specialised medical and forensic team from Delhi.

Members of the CBI team from Delhi also arrived at the CGO Complex in Kolkata.

According to CBI sources, a special team of medical officers and forensic experts from Delhi has reached the crime scene in Kolkata, where the doctor was allegedly raped.

On Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI investigation into the sexual assault and murder of the woman post-graduate trainee doctor, which occurred on August 9.

The Court directed the Kolkata Police to hand over all relevant documents to the CBI immediately.

Doctors and medical students staged a protest at AIIMS Delhi after the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) called for a nationwide shutdown of OPD services starting Tuesday in solidarity against the sexual assault and murder of the doctor.

Meanwhile, the National Medical Commission (NMC), under the direction of Union Health Minister JP Nadda, issued an advisory to all medical colleges and institutions to develop policies ensuring a safe work environment.

According to the official public notice, “Incidents of violence against doctors in medical colleges have been reported recently. All medical colleges are requested to develop a policy for a safe work environment within the college and hospital campus for all staff members, including faculty, medical students, and resident doctors.”

“The policy should ensure adequate safety measures in OPDs, wards, casualty departments, hostels, and other open areas on campus and in residential quarters. Corridors and campus areas should be well-lit in the evening to allow staff to walk safely, and all sensitive areas should be monitored by CCTV,” the notice added.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda also met with a delegation from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Tuesday. The IMA requested a thorough inquiry into the circumstances leading to the crime and the implementation of measures to enhance the safety of doctors, particularly women, in the workplace.

The post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. The victim’s family has alleged that she was raped and murdered. (ANI)
