Klay Thompson, a key figure in the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty, has agreed to join the Dallas Mavericks in a sign-and-trade deal, marking the conclusion of his illustrious tenure with the Warriors. The four-time NBA champion and five-time All-Star declined a contract extension offer from the Warriors last season.
In an official statement on Monday night, the Warriors acknowledged Klay Thompson’s pivotal role in their championship successes over 13 seasons and announced plans to retire his iconic No. 11 jersey. The terms of the trade were not confirmed by the Warriors, but reports indicate Klay Thompson will sign a three-year, $50 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks.
ESPN sources revealed that Klay Thompson’s move to Dallas positions him alongside All-Star guards Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. As part of the trade, the Dallas Mavericks will send Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets. In return, the Warriors are set to receive a financial trade exception and two second-round draft picks from Dallas.
During his tenure with the Warriors, Klay Thompson set NBA records for most points in a quarter (37) and most 3-pointers in a game (14), highlighting his prowess as a premier shooter. Known for his clutch performances, including memorable Game 6 heroics, Klay Thompson leaves a lasting legacy with Golden State.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr expressed the team’s desire for Klay Thompson’s return during the Team USA training camp last month, underscoring his significance to the franchise. Klay Thompson, drafted 11th overall in 2011, has spent his entire NBA career with the Warriors, never playing for another team.
His career statistics include a notable 41.3 percent shooting accuracy from beyond the arc, averaging 19.6 points per game with Golden State. Last season, he maintained a scoring average of 17.6 points per game and a 38.7 percent 3-point shooting rate, despite coming off the bench for part of the season.
In parallel moves, Golden State secured a one-year, $12.8 million deal with former Philadelphia 76ers guard De’Anthony Melton. Meanwhile, Dallas bolstered their roster with acquisitions including free agent Naji Marshall (three years, $27 million) and Quentin Grimes from the Detroit Pistons.
Klay Thompson’s departure marks a significant transition for both franchises as they prepare for the upcoming NBA season.
