  • Slow Dubai pitches demand set batters to play long innings.

Dubai: With the Champions Trophy around the corner, Indian cricketer KL Rahul exuded confidence in the team’s preparations despite the challenges posed by conditions and opposition strength. Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Rahul addressed key concerns, including his role in the batting order, the team’s fitness status, playing conditions, and the formidable challenge New Zealand poses in their upcoming fixture on March 2.

Rahul, who has often seen his batting position fluctuate, remained unfazed about where he might feature in the lineup. Emphasizing a team-first approach, he stated that his focus was on adapting to the situation as per the team’s needs, whether at the top of the order or in the middle. He reiterated his commitment to fulfilling the role assigned to him, highlighting that versatility is crucial in a high-stakes tournament like the Champions Trophy.

Providing an update on the squad’s fitness, Rahul assured that the team was in good shape, with only minor concerns that would be assessed during the final training session. He highlighted that all players have been actively participating in gym workouts and practice sessions, reinforcing India’s overall readiness. The conditions in Dubai, however, could prove tricky, with Rahul acknowledging that the pitches were notably slow, making it challenging for new batters to rotate strike immediately. He emphasized the importance of set batters capitalizing on their starts and converting them into big scores, as such innings could be decisive in the tournament’s short format.

India’s early arrival in the UAE has given the team an edge in adapting to the conditions. Rahul revealed that practice sessions on similar surfaces had allowed the players to fine-tune their approach, which could prove beneficial when facing a strong side like New Zealand. Aware of their opponents’ history, Rahul recognized that the Kiwis had posed a significant challenge to India in ICC events in the past. However, he maintained a confident outlook, stressing that India was focused on its strengths rather than dwelling on past encounters.

With the Champions Trophy format offering little room for setbacks, Rahul underlined the tournament’s high stakes, where every match carries immense significance, unlike the World Cup, where teams have more opportunities to recover. He also hinted that India was likely to prioritize match readiness over squad rotation, given the short turnaround before the knockout stage.

Despite India’s mixed history in Dubai, Rahul dismissed concerns about past performances, asserting that the team has evolved and delivered strong results in recent ICC events. He insisted that India was taking a step-by-step approach, focusing solely on the upcoming game rather than past disappointments. As the crucial encounter against New Zealand approaches, Rahul’s composed demeanor reflected a team well-prepared and eager to rise to the challenge.
