In India, especially in Delhi, people are troubled by the increasing population of pigeons, as they cause messes everywhere and lead to various problems. Similarly, the people of Kenya are facing issues due to Indian crows. Consequently, Kenya is planning to execute approximately 1 million crows that have migrated from India because Kenya is suffering from a million bird problem. So, what is this million bird problem, and why is Kenya killing the crows?
First, let’s try to understand the problem. This will help us comprehend why the Kenyan government has taken this step. The Kenya Wildlife Services states that Indian crows are invasive alien birds, meaning they are foreign birds that have been causing problems for tourists and farmers for decades and are harming the local bird population. These birds steal food from tourists, drive local bird species out of their habitats, and attack crops. Additionally, they create messes everywhere. Thus, these crows are not only troubling people but also disrupting Kenya’s wild ecosystem, prompting the Kenyan government to make this decision.
Environmentalists say that when foreign bird species invade and disturb the ecosystem of a particular geography, leading to a decline in the local species’ population, the environment begins to deteriorate. This causes an increase in insects, making it not just a short-term problem but a major issue. In this case, the impact of the crows is not limited to the species they directly target but affects the entire ecosystem.
Kenya has been trying for several years to find an alternative solution to this problem. After attempting to control the population of migrant crows, the Kenyan government has declared a kind of war against them. Under this plan, Kenya will execute one million crows by the end of this year. Despite being in the modern world today, Kenya is compelled to take such a step.
Kenya’s problem is quite similar to China’s. Here, it’s crows, and there, it was sparrows that caused similar issues. This phase in China is famously known as “China’s Sparrow War.” There, sparrows were damaging crops, so the Chinese government at that time allowed people to kill the sparrows, resulting in the killing of millions of sparrows.
On this topic, I would like to recommend a book by Ashwatha Tree Books titled “Chip Chip Chipper Calling,” which is about the Sparrow War. Read this well-researched book and let us know how you like it.
