In the wake of the tragic stampede at Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, which left 11 people dead and over 50 injured, the Karnataka government has taken decisive steps to manage the fallout. Among these are the dismissal of MLC K Govindaraj, Political Secretary to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and the transfer of the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Intelligence, Hemant M Nimbalkar. These moves come amid growing public criticism and police suspensions related to the event, highlighting the government’s attempt to contain the crisis.
Dismissal of Political Secretary K Govindaraj
The Chief Minister’s Office officially revoked the appointment of K Govindaraj as Political Secretary with immediate effect. Govindaraj, a key political aide to Siddaramaiah and a prominent figure in Karnataka’s sports community as the president of the Karnataka Olympic Association, was closely involved in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations that preceded the tragedy. While the government has not explicitly linked his dismissal to the stampede, the decision appears to be part of broader damage control efforts.
Govindaraj came under scrutiny after a letter he wrote on June 4 surfaced. In it, he requested government departments to make arrangements for a grand celebration of the RCB team’s victory in Bengaluru. This letter reportedly caused embarrassment to the Chief Minister’s Office, intensifying criticism of Govindaraj’s role in the events leading up to the disaster. Despite the controversy, Govindaraj denied advising the Chief Minister against holding a full victory parade, stating that as head of the Karnataka Olympic Association, he would be the last to offer cricket-related advice.
Police Transfers and Opposition Criticism
Alongside Govindaraj’s dismissal, the government transferred ADGP Intelligence Hemant M Nimbalkar, although he retains his additional role as Commissioner of the Department of Information and Public Relations. This follows the earlier resignation of LK Atheeq, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister, adding to the sense of upheaval within the administration.
Opposition parties, particularly the Karnataka BJP, have criticized the government’s actions as reactive and politically motivated. BJP state president BY Vijayendra accused the Congress-led government of acting solely under public and political pressure, pointing out the suspension of senior police officials, including the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner, and punitive measures against RCB and the Karnataka Cricket Association. The political debate underscores the pressure on the government to respond effectively to the tragedy while managing public accountability.
