India’s active Covid-19 cases have crossed the 5,000 mark, prompting state governments to issue advisories and the central government to ramp up preparedness efforts. With states like Kerala, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Delhi reporting significant new infections, authorities are focusing on ensuring medical readiness while urging public vigilance. The surge has reignited concerns amid ongoing efforts to contain the virus’s spread through increased testing, hospital readiness, and public health advisories.
Rising Cases and Regional Impact
As of Friday, India reported 5,364 active Covid-19 cases, with four new deaths in the past 24 hours. Kerala remains the most affected state, reporting 192 new cases, followed by Gujarat with 107, West Bengal 58, and Delhi 30 new infections. Delhi’s active case count has risen to 592, with seven deaths recorded since the start of the year. Maharashtra also reported 114 new cases, bringing its total to 1,276 for the year, along with one additional death. Most fatalities in Maharashtra involved patients with existing health complications, highlighting the vulnerability of those with comorbidities.
Haryana’s numbers increased by 31 cases, mainly concentrated in Gurugram and Faridabad districts. The state now has 87 active cases with a total of 151 confirmed since the start of the year. Haryana’s Health Minister Arti Singh Rao emphasized vigilance and preventive measures, stressing that timely action can significantly curb the virus’s spread without causing panic.
Precautionary Actions and Public Advisories
In Odisha, seven new Covid-19 cases raised the total in the current wave to 30. With 23 active cases currently, none are serious. Officials are considering public advisories, especially with the upcoming Rath Yatra festival. The state’s health officials have recommended that individuals exhibiting symptoms avoid attending the festival in person and instead watch it via media channels. Furthermore, Odisha plans to introduce preventive protocols in schools reopening on June 20, including mask mandates for symptomatic students and isolation for those with more severe symptoms.
West Bengal, which recorded 58 new cases and 91 recoveries in the last 24 hours, has an active case count of 596. Authorities reassured the public that the situation is under control but urged continued adherence to health protocols such as mask-wearing.
In response to the surge, the Centre has directed all states to ensure the availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines. Mock drills are being conducted to assess readiness at healthcare facilities, aiming to strengthen the response capability as infections rise.
