Karnataka’s political landscape witnessed heightened attention on Saturday as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar met for a breakfast meeting to discuss internal differences within the Congress-led state government. The meeting follows persistent speculation regarding a potential leadership reshuffle, with Shivakumar and his supporters insisting that a power-sharing understanding, previously discussed within the party, be honoured as the government reaches its halfway mark. Following the meeting, both leaders are expected to travel to Delhi for consultations with the Congress high command to address the ongoing concerns.
The meeting, reportedly initiated by Congress MP KC Venugopal, came at a time when the state government faces growing political scrutiny from opposition parties, particularly the BJP, which is said to be observing internal rifts for potential leverage. Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah, however, sent a clear message of unity post-discussion, emphasizing that there are no differences between them and reaffirming their commitment to collective governance and party stability.
Unity Reaffirmed Amid Leadership Speculation
The brief breakfast session between the two senior leaders aimed to consolidate the party’s stance ahead of the Karnataka winter assembly session scheduled from December 8 in Belagavi. Speaking to the media afterward, Siddaramaiah stated, “The unity will continue. We are together, united, and there are no differences between us.” He further highlighted that any confusion circulating in the media arises from misreported stories and false allegations.
Shivakumar echoed the sentiments, asserting that the Congress high command will guide the leadership decisions. “With the support of all of you, we have brought the Congress government and are working according to our promises. Whatever the high command says, we will follow, and there is no group. Even now, we are working together. Whatever the Chief Minister said, I am with the CM,” he said. Shivakumar emphasized the collective strength of the party and reaffirmed loyalty to Congress leadership, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi.
Both leaders also discussed strategies for the upcoming 2028 assembly elections, focusing on maintaining governance standards and strengthening party influence in Karnataka. According to insiders, the meeting served as an opportunity to resolve internal differences quietly, projecting stability to the public and party workers, while ensuring that governance priorities remain uninterrupted.
Congress MP KC Venugopal added his voice to the narrative of stability, stating, “Nothing will happen. Congress will be united. They are together now in Bengaluru.” Similarly, senior Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit downplayed the crisis, saying that internal discussions are routine and differences of opinion are natural in any political organisation. “The BJP is trying to seize an opportunity in this, but it will not gain anything from it,” Dikshit said, addressing opposition attempts to politicize the matter.
Political Dynamics and Opposition Response
While Congress seeks to project cohesion, opposition parties have been vocal in criticizing the ongoing internal tensions. JD(S) leader Nikhil Kumaraswamy remarked, “The Congress is united for breakfast but divided as a party in whole,” highlighting the perception of factionalism despite public displays of unity. Former Chief Minister and JDU leader HD Kumaraswamy labelled the ongoing crisis as an embarrassment for Karnataka, accusing the Congress of bringing disrepute to the state through political theatrics.
Amid the leadership tussle, Shivakumar also addressed potential no-confidence motions by the BJP, dismissing them with confidence. “As far as the no-confidence motion is concerned, let them do so. We are capable of running the assembly and the government. We will do it,” he said, reiterating the government’s stability and ability to function effectively despite opposition pressures.
The meeting also addressed operational priorities, including upcoming assembly session preparations, strategies to counter opposition challenges, and ensuring the implementation of governance promises made to the electorate. Both leaders highlighted the importance of upholding the party’s mandate, maintaining public trust, and ensuring that state administration remains unaffected by internal political negotiations.
Post-meeting, Shivakumar tweeted, “Met Hon’ble CM Shri Siddaramaiah avaru at Cauvery Residence this morning for a breakfast meeting. A productive discussion on Karnataka’s priorities and the road ahead.” The leaders are expected to provide a joint briefing to the media to clarify the outcomes of their discussion and reiterate party unity.
The high command’s involvement is expected to play a decisive role in resolving any lingering disagreements regarding leadership positions or ministerial reshuffles. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar stressed adherence to the high command’s directions, signalling that any resolution will align with the party’s larger strategic interests.
Political analysts note that while Congress has projected public unity, the underlying demand by Shivakumar for recognition in the power-sharing arrangement reflects ongoing factional dynamics within the party. However, party leadership’s swift intervention and the joint statements by senior leaders appear aimed at curbing speculation and preventing political opportunism by the opposition ahead of crucial legislative sessions.
The Karnataka crisis underscores the delicate balance within coalition politics, where regional considerations, leadership ambitions, and central party directives intersect. By addressing the issue proactively and demonstrating cohesion, Congress aims to reassure voters, party workers, and the media that governance remains the priority and that internal disagreements are being managed constructively.
As the state moves closer to the winter session, attention remains on Delhi, where discussions between Congress leaders from Karnataka and the high command are expected to determine the next steps in resolving the internal power tussle. Until then, both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar continue to publicly affirm their unity, focus on governance priorities, and maintain their commitment to fulfilling promises made to Karnataka’s electorate.
