  • Strict action promised against those responsible for stampede lapses.
  • Karnataka CM meets officials to address stampede tragedy quickly.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah convened a high-level meeting with senior police and administrative officials following the tragic stampede outside Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which occurred during the victory celebrations of the IPL-winning Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The incident claimed 11 lives and left over 75 injured, prompting immediate action from the state government to address the situation and ensure accountability.

Top Officials Review Investigation and Next Steps
At the Vidhana Soudha, Siddaramaiah met with key figures including Director General of Police MA Saleem, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, and Intelligence Chief Hemant Nimbalkar. Also present were Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, State Home Minister G Parameshwara, and Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh. The discussions focused on the ongoing investigation into the stampede, current court proceedings, and strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The government emphasized providing the best medical care to those injured, with State Minister MB Patil assuring that treatment would be facilitated even in private hospitals if necessary. He also stressed that any lapses leading to the tragedy would be thoroughly investigated and those responsible would face strict action within 15 days, irrespective of their status or position.

Legal Actions and Judicial Scrutiny Intensify
In response to the incident, Karnataka Police registered a criminal negligence case against the Karnataka Cricket Board Administrative Committee, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, event manager DNA, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Administrative Committee, and others. The FIR was filed at Cubbon Park Police Station, reflecting the serious nature of the charges linked to the mishandling of crowd control and safety measures during the celebrations.

Further intensifying the matter, the Karnataka High Court took suo motu cognizance of the tragedy. The court issued a notice to the state government seeking detailed information about the stampede, including ambulance deployment and emergency response at both the stadium and Vidhana Soudha events. The court’s intervention highlights the urgency of addressing the incident and preventing future tragedies. The case is scheduled for further hearing on June 10.

This meeting and the ensuing legal actions illustrate the state government’s commitment to addressing the aftermath of the stampede and ensuring justice and improved safety protocols moving forward.
