U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris’s election campaign raised an impressive $200 million and enlisted 170,000 new volunteers in the week since President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the reelection race and endorsed Harris for the November 5 vote against former President Donald Trump.
In a social media post, Harris’s deputy campaign manager, Rob Flaherty, stated, “In the week since we got started, Kamala Harris has raised $200 million dollars. 66% of that is from new donors. We’ve signed up 170,000 new volunteers.”
Earlier this month, Donald Trump’s campaign reported raising $331 million in the second quarter, surpassing the $264 million that Joe Biden’s campaign and its Democratic allies raised in the same period. At the end of June, Trump’s campaign had $284.9 million in cash on hand, while the Democratic campaign had $240 million available.
Kamala Harris has secured the support of a majority of delegates to the Democratic National Convention, likely ensuring she will become the party’s nominee for president next month.
Joe Biden withdrew from the race amid concerns about his age and health following a challenging debate performance against Donald Trump in late June. He pledged to remain in office until his term ends on January 20, 2025.
Democratic fundraiser praises Harris
A Democratic fundraiser emphasized Harris’s significance as a symbol of hope and representation for over 4.4 million Indian-Americans in the U.S. He highlighted the organic and grassroots enthusiasm surrounding her presidential campaign, according to a report from the Press Trust of India (PTI).
“Kamala Harris, with her Indian origin, brings an additional layer of excitement and support from the Indian-American community. As someone whose mother hailed from Chennai, India, Kamala Harris is not just a candidate but a symbol of hope and representation for over 4.4 million Indian-Americans,” said Ajay Bhutoria, deputy national finance chair for ‘Harris for President, 2024’, on Sunday.
“This community, historically engaged and influential, is poised to be a margin of victory in key battleground states,” Ajay Bhutoria stated.
“Kamala Harris has been a candidate for less than a week, but she’s already coalesced the entire Democratic Party around her campaign, and the organic, grassroots enthusiasm is producing results,” Ajay Bhutoria added.
“From record-breaking fundraising to unprecedented crowds and volunteers pouring into field offices across the battlegrounds, Team Harris is fired up to elect the Vice President and defeat the extremist Trump-Vance ticket,” he concluded.
