Jyothi Yarraji secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles race at the Asian Games, but this outcome was marred by some controversy. Initially, a Chinese runner had a false start but was permitted to continue. As a result of a subsequent review, Yarraji’s medal was elevated from bronze to silver. Here’s the explanation for this decision.
The women’s 100m hurdles concluded the Sunday events, featuring two Chinese contenders, Yuwei Lin and Yanni Wu, as top contenders for the gold medal. However, there was a false start at the race’s commencement, and it was evident to observers that Wu, positioned in Lane 4, was the one responsible, having advanced more than a single step ahead of the starting mark.
The Rules of Competing Under Protest
Upon reviewing the replays, the officials made an unexpected decision and displayed the ‘Disqualified’ card to Jyothi, who was in the neighboring lane. Jyothi, the Indian national record holder, immediately objected and requested to personally inspect the replays.
The Final Official Result Sheet
Authorities from the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) verified that following a protest, the officials conducted a reevaluation and rectified their initial decision. They reinstated Jyothi and disqualified Wu instead.
As a result of this, Wu lodged a protest and requested permission to compete under protest, which is permissible according to the rules. In this scenario, Wu ultimately secured second place, while Jyothi initially settled for third, provisionally earning the bronze medal. Nonetheless, the final official result sheet disqualified Wu and granted Jyothi the silver medal.
Jyothi Yarraji’s Previous Victory Against Yanni Wu
This incident was a repeat of a previous occurrence that took place earlier this year at the Asian Athletics Championships, as informed by Jyothi’s coach, James Hiller. In that previous instance, the controversy also revolved around Yanni Wu (who was disqualified), and Jyothi, India’s national record holder, emerged victorious with a gold medal.
Prime Minister Modi’s Praise for Jyothi Yarraji
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded her victory at Hangzhou in his post on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote: “An amazing Silver Medal win by @Jyothi Yarraji in Wonen’s 100 m Hurdles at the Asian Games.
