Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh on Sunday at the Rogers Centre in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, ahead of Diljit Dosanjh’s performance at the venue. The meeting highlighted Trudeau’s admiration for Canada’s cultural diversity and Diljit Dosanjh’s success.
Sharing a picture from their meeting on X (formerly Twitter), Trudeau expressed his support for Diljit Dosanjh, stating, “Stopped by the Rogers Centre to wish Diljit Dosanjh good luck before his show. Canada is a great country — one where a guy from Punjab can make history and sell out stadiums. Diversity isn’t just our strength. It’s a super power.” Trudeau’s comments underscored the significance of multiculturalism in Canada and celebrated Dosanjh’s achievements as a symbol of this diversity.
Diljit Dosanjh also shared the moment on X, emphasizing the role of diversity in Canada’s identity. “Diversity is Canada’s strength. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came to check out history in the making: we sold out the Rogers Centre!” Diljit Dosanjh’s post included a video of their meeting, showcasing the mutual respect and recognition between the two.
This meeting between Trudeau and Diljit Dosanjh occurred against the backdrop of strained relations between India and Canada. Tensions escalated following Trudeau’s allegations in September last year of a “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. New Delhi dismissed these allegations as “absurd.”
India has consistently maintained that the primary issue between the two nations is Canada’s perceived leniency towards pro-Khalistan elements operating on its soil. In June, Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra reiterated this concern, stating that Ottawa provides political space to anti-India elements advocating extremism and violence. India has repeatedly urged Canada to take decisive action against these groups.
Despite the diplomatic tensions, the meeting between Trudeau and Diljit Dosanjh served as a reminder of the strong cultural ties and shared values between the people of India and Canada. Trudeau’s support for Diljit Dosanjh highlighted the Canadian government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse society.
