Shibu Soren, the towering figure of tribal politics and the architect behind Jharkhand’s creation, passed away at the age of 81, leaving behind a vacuum in regional and national politics. Known as “Dishom Guru” (tribal teacher), Shibu Soren’s political journey embodied the aspirations of tribal communities across eastern India. He spent over four decades in active public life, founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and held multiple political offices, including that of the Chief Minister of Jharkhand and Union Coal Minister. His death was confirmed by his son, current Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who paid a heartfelt tribute to his father and political mentor.

Shibu Soren had been unwell for an extended period and was receiving treatment at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. He was admitted in the last week of June due to a kidney-related illness and was on ventilator support for several weeks. Despite medical efforts, the JMM patriarch breathed his last on Monday, marking the end of an era in Jharkhand’s political history.

The Journey of a Grassroots Leader

Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village of Ramgarh district (then in Bihar, now Jharkhand), Shibu Soren grew up witnessing the exploitation and marginalisation of tribal communities. His early experiences sowed the seeds of political activism. By the late 1960s and early 70s, he had emerged as a key voice advocating for tribal rights, land ownership, and social justice. This struggle eventually took a political form with the founding of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) in the 1970s.

Shibu Soren’s leadership was deeply rooted in grassroots activism. He travelled extensively across the Santhal Pargana and Chotanagpur regions, mobilising support among tribal populations. He championed causes such as protection of land rights under the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act and fought against displacement due to mining and industrial projects. His image as a crusader for the underprivileged helped him gain a loyal following, especially among Adivasi communities.

In national politics, Shibu Soren made a mark by getting elected to the Lok Sabha multiple times from the Dumka constituency. He served as a Member of Parliament during 1980–1984, 1989–1998, and again from 2002 to 2019. His role in shaping the politics of the newly created state of Jharkhand in 2000 was crucial, and he went on to serve as Chief Minister on three separate occasions. Though his terms were often cut short due to political instability, his influence over Jharkhand’s political landscape remained unmatched.

A Legacy Carved in the Making of Jharkhand

The formation of Jharkhand in November 2000 fulfilled a decades-long dream of a separate tribal state. Shibu Soren was among the most vocal advocates of this demand, which aimed to give indigenous communities greater political autonomy and cultural recognition. His leadership in this movement earned him respect across political lines and made him a symbol of Jharkhandi identity.

As the supremo of JMM for over 38 years, Shibu Soren steered the party through both triumphs and crises. Under his leadership, the party became the primary political force in Jharkhand and a major player in coalition politics at the Centre. He was also appointed as the Union Minister for Coal during the UPA regime, further underlining his significance in national governance.

Despite his towering influence, Shibu Soren’s political journey wasn’t without controversy. He faced legal challenges, including conviction in a decades-old murder case, which was later overturned. However, his connection with the masses remained largely intact. His followers revered him not just as a politician but as a cultural and spiritual figure who represented tribal dignity.

His passing comes at a critical time when his son Hemant Soren is navigating both administrative responsibilities and legal battles. The younger Shibu Soren has taken on the mantle of leadership but has always acknowledged his father as his ideological guide and political compass.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences, calling Shibu Soren a “grassroots leader” who dedicated his life to the upliftment of tribal communities and the downtrodden. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Modi said, “Shri Shibu Soren Ji was a grassroots leader who rose through the ranks of public life with unwavering dedication to the people. He was particularly passionate about empowering tribal communities, the poor and downtrodden. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Spoke to Jharkhand CM Shri Hemant Soren Ji and expressed condolences. Om Shanti.”

In Jharkhand, a wave of mourning swept through tribal regions, where people lit candles, offered prayers, and gathered in village squares to remember their leader. Political leaders from across the spectrum, including opposition parties, also paid tribute to Shibu Soren, acknowledging his unmatched contribution to the state and its people.

Shibu Soren’s life was one of relentless struggle, conviction, and service to a cause much larger than himself. He leaves behind a rich legacy, not only through the institutional foundations he built but also through the ideals he championed: justice, identity, and dignity for India’s tribal population.
