In a significant development, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has unveiled plans to enhance its academic offerings with the establishment of three new departments on its campus. The decision, approved by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, in her capacity as the visitor of JMI, marks a strategic move to expand the university’s academic landscape.
According to an official notification, amendments to the existing statute 20 have been sanctioned to accommodate these new departments. The Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education, conveyed its approval to JMI through a letter dated March 6, 2024, bearing reference number 6-11/2022-CU 2.
The newly introduced departments encompass a broad spectrum of disciplines, catering to diverse academic interests. Under the Faculty of Law, the Department of Law is poised to enrich the legal education landscape, offering students a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of the legal system. Additionally, the Faculty of Dentistry welcomes two new entities: the Department of Dental Sciences and the Department of Medical Sciences. These additions underscore JMI’s commitment to fostering excellence in dental and medical education.
In tandem with the establishment of these departments, JMI has also inaugurated innovative self-financed programmes aimed at providing cutting-edge education in engineering and technology. The new courses, available at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, offer specialized training in emerging fields.
Among the flagship programmes introduced are BTech in Electrical & Computer Engineering, BTech in Electronics (VLSI Design and Technology), and BTech in Computer Science & Engineering (Data Sciences). Complementing these undergraduate offerings is the MTech in Data Sciences, designed to equip students with advanced skills in data analysis and interpretation.
These self-financed programmes come with an annual fee structure of Rs 1,50,000 for BTech and Rs 54,000 for MTech, making quality education accessible to a broader spectrum of aspiring engineers and technologists. Prospective candidates can apply for these programmes through the official website of Jamia Millia Islamia— jmicoe.in.
