The Israeli military launched an airstrike on Sunday that demolished buildings in the Jenin refugee camp located in the occupied West Bank. According to the Palestinian state news agency, approximately 20 structures were leveled during this military operation. The blasts were captured in footage showing a series of explosions across the densely populated camp, which has been the focus of Israeli military actions for nearly two weeks. Thick plumes of smoke rose from the city, signaling the intensity of the airstrikes, which are part of a larger military campaign by Israeli forces. This operation, according to the Israeli military, targets Palestinian militant fighters and aims to seize weapons stockpiles believed to be hidden within the area.
In response to the escalating violence, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a statement condemning the Israeli military operation. He called on the United States to intervene and halt the Israeli aggression and called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to address the ongoing violence. Abbas further called on the international community to act and stop the Israeli military offensive against the Palestinian people.
The Israeli military, meanwhile, claimed that 23 structures were “dismantled” as part of the operation in northern West Bank after explosives laboratories, weapons, and observation posts were uncovered. The military also shared images of firearms, ammunition, and what appeared to be gas canisters, but it did not specify the exact location where these materials were found.
The escalation has affected the Jenin Government Hospital, with some parts of the facility suffering damage due to the explosions, although reports suggest that there were no casualties at the hospital. The city of Jenin, known for being home to a large refugee camp, has been a focal point for militant activity for decades. The camp houses descendants of Palestinians who were either driven out or fled their homes during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, when the state of Israel was founded.
Israeli forces began their assault on Jenin on January 21, backed by helicopters and armored bulldozers, just two days after a ceasefire was declared between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Israel views the West Bank as a crucial part of its multi-front conflict against Iranian-backed groups stationed around its borders, including in Gaza, Lebanon, and Yemen. The Jenin operation marks a significant escalation in this broader regional conflict.
As the violence continues, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees has reported that nearly all of the 20,000 residents of the Jenin camp have been displaced within the past two months due to the ongoing military operations. The conflict has also drawn attention from Hamas, which called for an “escalation in the resistance” following the destruction of buildings in Jenin.
The Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank, continues to struggle with limited control over the region as Israeli forces maintain overall military control. Since the operation began, clashes between Israeli forces and local militants have been frequent, with at least 25 Palestinians reported dead, including nine militants, a 73-year-old man, and a two-year-old girl. In contrast, Israeli military officials report having killed at least 35 militants and detained over 100 individuals deemed “wanted.”
Additionally, on Sunday, the Palestinian news agency reported that a 27-year-old Palestinian man was killed during an Israeli raid on a refugee camp near Hebron. The situation remains dire as military operations intensify in the West Bank, with no immediate end in sight. The ongoing clashes and military actions continue to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis and the political tensions between Israel and Palestine, leaving thousands of civilians caught in the crossfire.
