Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon on Sunday resulted in casualties, including the deaths of 5 Hezbollah fighters and 2 civilians, as confirmed by official media outlets and Hezbollah itself. The strikes were carried out by Israel’s military, targeting the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, which had claimed retaliatory attacks.
The Israeli military spokesperson, Daniel Hagari, announced in a televised briefing that the strikes had successfully targeted and eliminated 7 Hezbollah terrorists in several air attacks in southern Lebanon. Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) reported that the Israeli strikes targeted motorbikes in 3 different border villages in south Lebanon, resulting in casualties in Hula, Aita al-Shaab, and Naqura.
According to Hezbollah, 5 of their fighters were killed in the airstrikes, with one casualty confirmed in Naqura. The group claimed responsibility for at least 14 attacks on Israeli troops and positions, including rocket barrages, some of which were in retaliation for strikes on villages in south Lebanon.
The Israeli military stated that they identified and targeted a Hezbollah operative in the Naqura area, as well as two Hezbollah terrorists operating in the Aita al-Shaab area. Following warning sirens in Israel’s Kiryat Shmona area, the Magen David Adom emergency medical service treated a 40-year-old male with light blast injuries.
In recent weeks, Hezbollah has escalated cross-border attacks, purportedly in support of Gazans and Hamas, while Israel has conducted airstrikes deeper into Lebanese territory. The ongoing violence has resulted in casualties on both sides, with Lebanon reporting over 440 deaths, mostly militants, and Israel reporting casualties among both soldiers and civilians.
The situation underscores the heightened tensions in the region and the risk of further escalation between Israel and Hezbollah, with the potential for broader implications on regional stability.
