The Israel-Iran conflict has taken a dangerous new turn, with targeted strikes and deadly consequences escalating tensions across West Asia. On June 13, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the Natanz nuclear facility—central to Iran’s uranium enrichment efforts—was struck by Israeli forces. On the same day, Iranian state media reported the deaths of two of its most powerful military leaders, General Hossein Salami and General Mohammad Bagheri. These back-to-back developments point to a significant escalation in what has long been a high-stakes standoff over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

A Growing Nuclear Threat

At the heart of this conflict is a question that has haunted global diplomacy for years: Is Iran on the brink of developing nuclear weapons? While Tehran insists its nuclear programme is solely for peaceful purposes like energy and medicine, the latest report from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) suggests otherwise. As of May 2025, Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile has ballooned to over 9,247 kilograms—45 times the limit agreed under the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA). Of that, more than 400 kilograms have been enriched to 60% purity—alarmingly close to weapons-grade level, which begins at 90%.

This stockpile could theoretically be refined further to produce about 10 nuclear bombs, according to the IAEA. Although Iran hasn’t declared enrichment beyond 60%, and no active weapons programme has been confirmed, inspectors have found particles enriched up to 83.7% in the past. Ongoing restrictions on monitoring and reduced transparency have only deepened international concerns.

Strikes, Retaliation, and Regional Flashpoints

The Natanz strike is part of a broader campaign by Israel, which has long regarded a nuclear-armed Iran as an existential threat. The site is heavily fortified and houses dozens of centrifuge cascades used to enrich uranium. It’s not the first time it’s been hit—sabotage blamed on Israel damaged the facility in 2021 as well. Other sites like Fordow, Isfahan, and Khondab have also drawn scrutiny. Fordow, in particular, is viewed as a serious threat after uranium enriched to 83.7% was detected there in 2023.

Meanwhile, Iran has expanded its nuclear infrastructure beyond military-style enrichment. Facilities in Darkhovin and Sirik are now being developed to generate nuclear power, further complicating the international community’s response.

The deaths of Salami and Bagheri, among other military and nuclear figures, suggest a more aggressive phase in Israel’s efforts to halt Iran’s nuclear advances. With growing stockpiles, limited oversight, and mounting military responses, the region teeters dangerously close to a broader conflict fueled by nuclear fears.
