What began as a routine international flight turned into a devastating tragedy on June 12 when Air India flight AI171 crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad. The flight, headed to London, carried 241 people, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Only one person survived the crash. For many, the incident marked a national disaster. For those close to Vijay Rupani, it was made more tragic by a cruel twist of fate—his long-time lucky number, 1206, was tied to the flight and would ultimately be associated with his untimely death.

A Number That Followed Him Everywhere

For Vijay Rupani, 1206 wasn’t just digits—it was a symbol of fortune. From his early days in Gujarat politics to his tenure as chief minister, the number showed up in small but meaningful ways. It was his car number, often used in signatures, and featured on official documents and election forms. Vijay Rupani had publicly spoken of it as his “lucky charm,” and even supporters believed it to be a sign of good luck.

But as fate would have it, that number would also be associated with the end of his journey. Vijay Rupani was one of 241 people aboard AI171 when it crashed after struggling to gain altitude. The aircraft collided with a hostel building used by medical college students, killing five students on the ground instantly. Initial reports indicated that the plane was fully loaded with aviation fuel for the long-haul flight to London, which may have intensified the impact and destruction.

Moments Before the Crash

Shortly after takeoff, the pilot issued a “Mayday” call—a distress signal indicating an emergency. Air Traffic Control responded quickly, but their repeated attempts to re-establish communication with the aircraft went unanswered. It was only minutes later that the tragic crash was confirmed.

Gujarat BJP state president CR Patil confirmed Vijay Rupani’s death and called it an irreparable loss for the party. “Our leader, former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, died in this tragedy. May God grant peace to his soul. This is a great loss for the BJP family as well,” he said in a statement.

What was once a symbol of hope and success for Vijay Rupani—1206—has now become a painful reminder of an unexpected and heartbreaking end.
