Israeli forces intensified their operations in southern Gaza on Monday, particularly near Khan Younis, as international efforts to halt the ongoing conflict in Gaza gained momentum. The situation in the region is increasingly precarious, with fears growing that the violence could spill over into a wider conflict involving Iran and its proxies.
The ongoing military actions have resulted in significant casualties. According to Palestinian medical sources, at least 18 people were killed and several others wounded in Israeli airstrikes on Khan Younis. As the violence escalated, more residents and displaced individuals were seen evacuating areas under new Israeli orders to leave.
Additional Israeli airstrikes claimed more lives later in the day. Five people were reported killed in Gaza City’s Zeitoun suburb, and two others in Rafah, near the Egyptian border, further adding to the mounting death toll.
While the fighting raged on, Hamas expressed skepticism about the latest round of Egyptian and Qatari-brokered peace talks scheduled for Thursday. The group criticized the absence of movement from Israel and insisted that any ceasefire proposal should be based on ideas put forth by U.S. President Joe Biden, which Hamas had previously accepted. Hamas warned against further rounds of negotiations or new proposals that might provide cover for what they described as Israeli aggression.
Sources close to Hamas indicated that the group believes the renewed calls for talks are an attempt to prevent retaliatory actions from Iran and Hezbollah following the recent assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and a senior Hezbollah commander in Lebanon. Despite this, there remains a possibility that Hamas might reconsider if Israel responds positively to the ceasefire proposal.
The potential for a larger regional conflict continues to grow, with the United States ordering a guided missile submarine to the Middle East and accelerating the deployment of the Abraham Lincoln strike group to the region. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant reportedly informed U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin that Iran is preparing for a large-scale military attack on Israel, a development that has heightened tensions in the region.
The Middle East has been in turmoil since the Gaza war erupted 11 months ago. The conflict escalated dramatically on October 7 when Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israeli communities around the Gaza Strip, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages. Israel responded with relentless airstrikes, displacing the majority of Gaza’s population and resulting in the deaths of around 40,000 people, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
The international community has been horrified by the scale of the destruction and loss of life. On Saturday, Israeli strikes targeted a school building in Gaza City, killing scores of people. The Israeli military claimed the strike targeted fighters from Hamas and Islamic Jihad, but both groups denied the presence of their fighters at the school. Gaza health officials have stated that most of the conflict’s fatalities have been civilians, while Israel asserts that at least a third were combatants. Israel also reported losing 330 soldiers in the conflict.
As the war in Gaza continues with no end in sight, the region remains on the brink of a broader and more devastating conflict. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, hoping for a resolution that could prevent further escalation and bring an end to the violence.
