Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has informed Brazil’s Supreme Court that it has complied with the court’s orders aimed at curbing the spread of misinformation and has requested the lifting of the ban imposed on the platform. This request marks a significant shift in Elon Musk’s approach, as he has been engaged in a prolonged conflict with Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who has led efforts to combat perceived threats to democracy and disinformation in Brazil.
The Supreme Court’s decision regarding X’s reinstatement is still pending, but sources close to Elon Musk believe that the service could be operational again within days. Brazil is one of X’s largest and most important markets, boasting approximately 21.5 million users, making the platform’s return critical for Elon Musk’s business interests.
The conflict began when Justice de Moraes ordered the suspension of X in late August due to Elon Musk’s refusal to comply with demands to halt misinformation campaigns. This crackdown on the platform coincided with Elon Musk’s controversial decision to close X’s offices in Brazil, intensifying the legal battle. The repercussions of this conflict also extended to Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, which had its accounts frozen by the same judge, prompting Elon Musk to label de Moraes as a “dictator.”
In recent developments, X has indicated a willingness to cooperate with Brazilian authorities, demonstrating a more conciliatory tone that contrasts with Elon Musk’s previous combative stance. Following the court’s actions, X took measures to circumvent the ban using third-party cloud services, enabling Brazilian users to access the platform temporarily, although this tactic proved ineffective when de Moraes threatened significant fines against the company.
Late last week, X further signaled its compliance by appointing a local legal representative as required by the court. In a document submitted to the Supreme Court, X stated that it had taken action against nine accounts under investigation for involvement in spreading hate speech and misinformation.
Rubens Barbosa, a former Brazilian ambassador to the United States, welcomed Elon Musk’s change in strategy, asserting the importance of adhering to legal directives. Reports suggest that Elon Musk will adopt a different approach once X resumes operations in Brazil. While he may still be combative in nature, insiders indicate that he intends to respect the law and pursue any disagreements through legal channels rather than confrontational tactics. This shift reflects a recognition of the complexities of operating in Brazil’s regulatory environment and the importance of maintaining market presence.
