Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan made a notable comeback to red-ball cricket by scoring a remarkable century in the Duleep Trophy, sparking discussions about his potential return to the Indian national team. Representing India C, Kishan scored 111 runs off 126 balls, demonstrating his aggressive batting style and reaffirming his talent. This performance marks an impressive return to the longer format of the game after an extended absence.
Kishan last represented India during the 2023 tour of South Africa but withdrew from the series due to mental fatigue. Since then, he has been absent from India’s playing XI. Despite missing Jharkhand’s Ranji Trophy campaign, Kishan did play in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Mumbai Indians. However, his continued absence from the Test squad had raised questions about his future in red-ball cricket.
With this commanding century, Kishan silenced his critics. His innings, which included 14 fours and three sixes, played a crucial role in India C’s innings. He also formed a key 189-run partnership for the third wicket with Baba Indrajith, who scored 78 off 136 balls. Following the match, Kishan took to Instagram, sharing pictures from his innings with the caption: “Unfinished Business.” This brief message created a stir among fans and analysts, suggesting his resolve to stake a claim for a return to the Indian Test side.
Although Kishan was not selected for India’s upcoming Test series against Bangladesh, his hundred in the Duleep Trophy will certainly attract the selectors’ attention. His performance comes at a time when India’s wicketkeeping department is in transition, and Kishan’s current form may open up future opportunities.
Kishan was a late addition to the India C squad, joining on the eve of the game after recovering from a groin injury that had ruled him out of the tournament’s first round. Initially, Sanju Samson had replaced him in the India D squad due to the injury, but Kishan’s timely recovery allowed him to make a significant impact.
