Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan criticized Mumbai Indians’ captain Hardik Pandya following the team’s defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday. Pathan’s remarks came after Mumbai Indians failed to chase down 170 runs, getting bowled out for just 145 at the Wankhede Stadium.
Expressing his views on his Instagram channel post-match, Pathan questioned Pandya’s decision to bowl three overs of Naman Dhir when Kolkata Knight Riders were struggling at 57/5 in the 7th over. Pathan suggested that Mumbai Indians could have contained Kolkata Knight Riders to 150 runs but ended up conceding 20 extra runs, leading to their defeat.
“Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2024 journey seems to be over. While they appeared strong on paper, their management has been lacking. Hardik Pandya’s captaincy has come under scrutiny, and rightfully so. By bowling three overs of Naman Dhir when KKR was at 57/5, Mumbai missed a crucial opportunity. Allowing a significant partnership to form between Manish Pandey and Venkatesh Iyer proved costly,” Pathan remarked on Instagram.
Pathan further emphasized the importance of cohesive team dynamics in cricket and suggested that Mumbai Indians might be facing challenges in this regard. He hinted at possible internal conflicts within the team, which could be affecting their performance.
“Cricket relies heavily on effective leadership and team unity, and Mumbai Indians seem to be lacking in these aspects this season. It’s crucial for players to fully support their captain, and it appears that Mumbai Indians may be struggling in this regard,” Pathan added.
Similar sentiments were echoed by former Australian cricketer Michael Clarke, who raised concerns about Mumbai Indians’ inconsistent performance and hinted at internal rifts within the team.
With 6 points from 11 games, Mumbai Indians currently occupy the 9th position in the IPL 2024 league table.
