Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian embarked on a journey to the Saudi port city of Jeddah on Tuesday to participate in the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) extraordinary meeting focusing on the dire situation unfolding in Gaza.
Before his departure, Amirabdollahian was bid farewell by Saudi Ambassador to Iran Abdullah bin Saud al-Anzi, marking a gesture of diplomatic cooperation amidst the urgent discussions ahead.
Significantly, the OIC foreign ministerial meeting, scheduled for March 5 in Jeddah, is convened with the primary objective of assessing the ongoing crisis in Gaza, a region marred by escalating violence and humanitarian distress.
Elaborating on the details of the meet, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said, “The meeting is going to be held as demanded by Iran and some other Islamic countries to review the latest developments in Gaza and to hold talks on taking effective measures in order to immediately stop the Zionist regime’s raids against the oppressed Palestinian nation as well as the genocide in Gaza.”
Further, the Iranian foreign minister during his visit will deliver a speech in the meeting to elaborate on Iran’s views and proposals on the unravelling incidents in Palestine.
During the event, he will also meet and hold talks with some officials and his counterparts from the participating countries.
It is pertinent to note that this isn’t the first time the OIC has convened in response to the Gaza crisis. On October 18, 2023, just 11 days following the commencement of hostilities in Gaza, the organization hastily organized an emergency meeting in Jeddah to deliberate on the evolving developments in the besieged Strip.
Death Toll hits 30,000 mark
Meanwhile, despite international calls for peace and intervention, the death toll in Gaza has soared past 30,000, with a disproportionate number of casualties comprising women and children, further underscoring the urgency and gravity of the situation.
