Iranian state media reported that the country’s air defenses intercepted and brought down three drones over the central city of Isfahan, following explosions heard in the area. This development came hours after US broadcasters, citing senior US officials, claimed that Israeli missiles had targeted an Iranian site.
Iranian state television documented explosions in Isfahan, accompanied by the activation of air defense systems and the suspension of flights across multiple regions, including Tehran and Isfahan. Fortunately, there were no reports of casualties.
According to the state broadcaster, at approximately 1230 AM GMT, three drones were spotted in the sky over Isfahan, prompting the activation of air defense systems, resulting in the destruction of the drones.
Earlier reports from ABC News and CBS News, citing senior US officials, suggested that Israel had launched missiles at a site in Iran. This action follows Iran’s alleged barrage of drones and missiles targeting Israel in response to a suspected Israeli strike on Iran’s consulate compound in Damascus, which resulted in the deaths of two senior generals.
Iran’s space agency spokesman, Hossein Dalirian, confirmed the downing of “several” drones but stated that there were no reports of a missile attack at the time. Isfahan, a strategically significant city hosting military research and development sites, remained secure, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency.
Meanwhile, there were also reports of explosions in Iraq and Syria. Rayan Maarouf, who manages the Suwayda24 anti-government website covering news from Sweida province in southern Syria, mentioned strikes on a Syrian army radar position.
The United States and European countries had urged Israel to refrain from responding to Iran’s previous attack. However, there was no immediate comment from the White House or Pentagon.
On Thursday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned about the escalating tensions in the Middle East, highlighting the precarious situation arising from the conflict in Gaza and Iran’s actions. Guterres warned of the potential for a full-scale regional conflict and called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint.
