In a stern rebuke, Qatar has reiterated its condemnation of Israeli threats to storm the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, warning of an impending humanitarian catastrophe. The nation expressed grave concern that such an attack would exacerbate the plight of over 1.5 million displaced individuals who have sought refuge within the besieged Strip.
The condemnation was articulated by Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Dr. Hind Abdulrahman Al Muftah, during a briefing on the latest developments in Gaza. The briefing, organized by the Permanent Mission of the Arab Republic of Egypt in its capacity as Chairman of the Arab Group in Geneva, emphasized the urgent need for international intervention.
Dr. Al Muftah stressed the imperative for the international community to uphold United Nations resolutions and International Court of Justice decisions. She called for concerted efforts to end the conflict in Gaza, secure an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, safeguard civilian lives in accordance with international humanitarian law, and facilitate the unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid into the region. Additionally, she urged support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to fulfill its humanitarian obligations to Palestinian refugees.
Addressing the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, the Qatari Ambassador highlighted the ongoing suffering endured by its residents. The relentless Israeli attacks and bombings have resulted in widespread destruction and the disruption of essential services, including electricity, water, sanitation, and food supplies. Furthermore, the scarcity of fuel and medical supplies has exacerbated the already dire conditions faced by the population.
