The Iranian government on Tuesday introduced a visa-free travel regime for Indian tourists entering the country by air. Effective from February 4, the decision aims to facilitate easier access for Indian citizens, those wishing to travel for tourism purposes.
In its statement released yesterday, the Iranian embassy in India, outlines four key conditions under which Indian nationals can avail themselves of the visa-free travel arrangement. According to the new regulations, individuals holding ordinary Indian passports can enter Iran without a visa once every six months, with a maximum stay of 15 days per visit.
It’s important to note that the visa abolition specifically pertains to tourists entering Iran by air and applies solely to those visiting for travel purposes. However, Individuals seeking a longer stay, multiple entries within six months, or other types of permissions must obtain the necessary visas from Iranian missions in India, as per the statement issued by the embassy.
Iran’s decision to waive visa requirements for Indian citizens aligns with its broader strategy to enhance tourism and attract visitors from around the world. The decision first came in December of last year when the nation, along with India named 31 other countries, including Russia, the UAE, Japan, and Brazil, among others, to avail same travel benefit.
Ezzatollah Zarghami, Iran’s Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicraft, announcing the Cabinet’s decision, highlighted that the initiative aims to promote tourism and counter negative perceptions about the country. By eliminating visa requirements, Iran seeks to combat the spread of ‘Iranophobia’ perpetuated by global powers while showcasing its cultural richness and hospitality to international travelers.
It is pertinent to note that Iran’s decision to implement visa-free travel for Indian tourists comes at a time when several other countries, including Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia, have also relaxed visa requirements for Indian citizens. Presently, a total of 27 countries offer visa-free entry to Indians, further expanding opportunities for travel and cross-cultural exchange.
