  • UK PM Keir Starmer backed India for a permanent UNSC seat.
  • US President Biden and French President Macron recently voiced similar support.
  • UNSC currently has five permanent members: US, UK, Russia, China, and France.
  • Starmer called for more permanent members, including India, Brazil, Japan, and Germany.
  • He also advocated for permanent African representation on the UNSC.
  • India has long argued the UNSC is outdated and does not reflect today’s global realities.
  • India last served as a non-permanent member in 2021-2022.
  • The UN Secretary-General also urged for UNSC reform, calling it “outdated.”
  • Calls for expanding the UNSC are growing to make it more representative and functional.
