In a significant diplomatic achievement, Moscow has agreed to discharge and facilitate the return of all Indian nationals who were misled into joining the Russian Army. This decision came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his ongoing visit to Russia, raised the issue with President Vladimir Putin.
Several Indians, enticed by promises of lucrative jobs or educational opportunities, found themselves recruited into the Russian Army to fight against Ukraine. Since the war’s inception in February 2022, at least four Indian nationals have lost their lives in the conflict. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, an estimated 30-40 Indians are currently serving in the Russian Army. Reports indicate that many of these individuals were unable to leave the army despite their desire to return home. However, ten Indians have already been successfully repatriated.
The Indian government had been engaged in various diplomatic efforts to secure the release of these citizens, but a formal assurance from Russia was pending. Securing the discharge of Indian citizens was one of the top priorities during PM Modi’s visit to Moscow.
Before the visit, Congress leaders questioned whether PM Modi would address the issue of Indians fighting for the Russian army. Congress General Secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, posed several pointed questions on social media platform X. He highlighted the plight of the Indians involved in the conflict, questioning whether PM Modi would ensure their safe return. “At least two individuals have already been confirmed as fatalities of the war. Many others have been ‘duped’ into fighting a war where they have no stake, aside from a chance to escape the poverty and unemployment crisis that the non-biological Prime Minister has perpetuated domestically. Will the non-biological Prime Minister take up the cause of these youth? Will he ensure their safe return to India as soon as possible?” Ramesh asked.
On Tuesday, PM Modi is scheduled to hold summit talks with President Putin, marking his first visit to Russia since 2019 and the first since the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The discussions are expected to explore ways to further expand bilateral relations in diverse areas, including trade, energy, and defense, at the 22nd India-Russia annual summit.
The agreement to discharge and repatriate Indian nationals marks a significant step in addressing the humanitarian concerns arising from the conflict. It underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement and the commitment of the Indian government to safeguard the interests and well-being of its citizens abroad. As the summit progresses, both leaders are anticipated to strengthen their bilateral ties, reflecting the enduring partnership between India and Russia.
