In an inspiring tale of resilience and determination, Indian athlete Ram Baboo has qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics in the 20 km racewalk event, marking a significant milestone in a journey fraught with challenges, including a stint as a laborer during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Emerging from a background of daily wage labor, Baboo faced daunting obstacles when the pandemic shuttered training facilities and gyms. Compelled to support his family, he worked under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) alongside his father. Despite these hardships, Baboo remained committed to his athletic goals, training on roads for six months starting in July 2020.
His perseverance paid off in September 2021, when he set a national record in the 35 km racewalk, earning him a spot on the Indian team and eventually leading to his selection for the upcoming Olympic games.
Baboo’s preparation for Olympic qualification has been comprehensive, focusing on enhancing his speed, endurance, strength, and technical skills. He expressed his gratitude towards the UP government, the Union Sports Ministry, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), and IOS Sports and Entertainment for their unwavering support.
His journey from manual labor to standing on the cusp of Olympic competition not only underscores his remarkable dedication but also serves as an emblem of hope and triumph over adversity for the nation. Baboo, an Asian Games medalist, is poised to represent India on the global stage, embodying the spirit of resilience as the world recovers from the pandemic.
