In an unprecedented security initiative, France has called upon the assistance of 45 countries to fortify its security measures for the forthcoming Paris Olympics, aiming to safeguard the event against the backdrop of heightened global tensions. French officials plan to deploy an extensive security force comprising approximately 45,000 French police, 20,000 private security agents, and 15,000 military personnel each day during the summer games, as millions of international sports fans are expected to visit.
The decision to enhance security measures comes in the wake of ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and the persistent menace of terrorism, pushing France to raise its security alert to the highest level. The country’s proactive approach reflects a commitment to ensure the safety of participants and visitors amidst a challenging global security landscape.
While it is a common practice for countries hosting large-scale international events to seek police support from abroad, the request for military assistance underscores the unique security challenges faced by the Paris Olympics. France’s request, made in January, encompasses a diverse range of military and police roles, including anti-drone experts, mine clearance specialists, and sniffer dog teams, aiming to bolster over 2,000 personnel both from military and civilian capacities.
Countries such as Poland and Germany have already pledged their support, with Poland sending sniffer dog handlers and Germany confirming its contribution earlier in March. Additionally, key European allies, including Britain and Italy, are set to dispatch police forces to aid in patrolling efforts. So far, 35 countries have responded positively to France’s call for assistance.
This collaborative security effort reflects a strategy previously employed during the 2023 Rugby World Cup, which saw participation from 160 members of European security forces. Notably, the US and Israel will also contribute their security capacities, with special attention to the Israeli delegation due to concerns amplified by the war in Gaza.
