In a setback to India’s Paris 2024 Olympics preparations, the Indian men’s hockey team faced a defeat at the hands of Australia, succumbing 4-2 in the second game of the five-match series on Sunday.
Jugraj Singh (9’) and Harmanpreet Singh (30’) found the net for India, while Jeremy Hayward (6′, 34’), Jacob Anderson (42’), and Nathan Ephraums (45′) led Australia’s charge.
The encounter commenced with cautious play from both sides, but Australia, ranked one place above India at world No. 4, took the lead early on with Jeremy Hayward’s penalty corner goal.
Turnaround: Despite Australia’s early dominance, India leveled the score through Jugraj Singh’s penalty corner strike. Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh then edged India ahead with his 180th international goal just before halftime.
However, Australia bounced back strongly, with Hayward converting his second penalty corner and additional goals from Anderson and Ephraums, securing a commanding 4-2 lead.
In a bid to salvage the match, India intensified their attack in the final quarter, but Australia’s disciplined defense thwarted their efforts, allowing only one penalty corner.
The Indian men’s hockey team will seek redemption in the third match against Australia at the same venue on Wednesday, as they strive to overturn the series deficit.
With the series now 2-0 in favor of Australia, India faces an uphill battle to stage a comeback and salvage their pride in the remaining matches of the series.
