A tragic incident in Latina, Italy, has claimed the life of Satnam Singh, an Indian national working as a labourer on a farm. Satnam Singh, aged between 30 and 31, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday after a horrific workplace accident severed his arm.
The Indian Embassy in Italy expressed condolences and confirmed their awareness of Satnam Singh’s unfortunate demise. “Efforts are underway to contact the family and provide consular assistance,” the Embassy stated in a post on X.
According to reports, Satnam Singh was injured while operating machinery to cut hay on Monday. His arm was tragically severed during the operation. Shockingly, instead of rendering immediate aid, Satnam Singh’s employers allegedly abandoned him on the roadside near his residence, prompting strong condemnation from local authorities and trade unions.
Italian Labour Minister Marina Calderone described the incident as “a true act of barbarity” during a parliamentary session. The situation was likened to a “horror film” by the Flai CGIL trade union, which represents workers in the agriculture and food industry in Italy.
Upon receiving distress calls from Satnam Singh’s wife and friends, local police dispatched an air ambulance to transport him to a hospital in Rome. Despite efforts to save him, Satnam Singh passed away around midday on Wednesday, as confirmed by a police spokesperson in Latina.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to Satnam Singh’s death. It was revealed that Satnam Singh had been working at the farm without proper legal documentation, raising concerns about the vulnerability of migrant workers in the region.
The incident has sparked outrage and calls for justice from various quarters, including Italy’s Democratic Party, which condemned the treatment of Satnam Singh as a “defeat for civilisation” in an area known for exploiting workers.
As investigations continue, there is a growing demand for accountability and measures to ensure the safety and rights of all workers, especially migrant labourers who contribute significantly to Italy’s agricultural sector.
The tragic death of Satnam Singh highlights the urgent need for improved workplace safety standards and the protection of migrant workers in Italy.
