On Thursday, India reportedly escalated tensions with Pakistan when its drone breached the Pakistani air defence system and entered Lahore, Punjab’s largest city. The incident follows India’s ongoing military operation, “Operation Sindoor,” in retaliation for Pakistan-sponsored terror activities. The drone operation was part of a broader counter-strike, targeting Pakistan’s air defence systems. Social media posts later showed a video of the Indian drone flying over Lahore’s airspace, marking a significant move in the ongoing conflict between the two nations.

India’s Retaliatory Strike with Harpy Drones

India deployed Harpy drones to target Pakistan’s air defence systems, causing significant damage. These drones were part of India’s effort to retaliate after Pakistan attempted to breach India’s radar system on Wednesday night with loitering munitions. Pakistan’s attempt was thwarted by India’s advanced S-400 air defence system, which successfully neutralized the incoming missiles. In response to the failed attack, India launched its own series of drone strikes into Pakistan, including major cities such as Lahore and Rawalpindi.

According to sources, Pakistan’s air defence units, specifically the HQ-9 missile launchers, suffered substantial damage during the drone strikes. Furthermore, the air defence systems deployed in Lahore were reportedly neutralized, indicating the effectiveness of India’s countermeasures. These events come in the wake of India’s Operation Sindoor, launched earlier this week to avenge the terror attack on civilians in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that resulted in multiple fatalities. India focused its strikes on terrorist camps located in Pakistan’s Punjab province and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, targeting only military infrastructure.

Pakistan’s Retaliatory Actions and India’s Response

The situation escalated further when Pakistan attempted to launch a series of attacks on India’s military targets using drones and missiles. According to India’s Ministry of Defence, Pakistan targeted a range of locations, including Jammu, Srinagar, and Pathankot, on the night of May 7-8, 2025. However, India’s Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems successfully neutralized these threats, preventing significant damage. The debris from these attacks is being recovered across several locations, substantiating the attempted strikes from Pakistan.

In the early hours of May 8, Indian forces targeted Pakistan’s air defence radars and systems, particularly in Lahore, where one of the major air defence systems was reportedly neutralized. The situation has intensified, with reports of explosions and gunfire heard across Lahore and Karachi today. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh confirmed that Operation Sindoor is ongoing and, therefore, further details about the operation would not be disclosed at this time. The operation underscores India’s commitment to national security and its resolve to respond decisively to any security threat posed by Pakistan.
