As the Paris Olympics 2024 draws nearer, Indian athletes across various sports disciplines have secured their spots for the prestigious event. Building on the success of the Tokyo Olympics 2020, where 124 Indian athletes participated, expectations are high for an even larger contingent this time around.
Athletics and Shooting have emerged as the frontrunners in terms of securing Olympic quotas for India. In Athletics, notable achievements include seven race walkers and star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, while Shooting has seen a remarkable 20 athletes earning qualification spots.
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has played a pivotal role in securing quotas in Shooting, with shooters excelling across rifle/pistol and shotgun events. Young talent Rudrankksh Patil kickstarted India’s qualification campaign with a quota in the men’s 10m Air Rifle event at the ISSF World Championships 2022.
In Athletics, the likes of Neeraj Chopra, Kishore Jena, Parul Chaudhary, Avinash Sable, and Murali Sreeshankar have already booked their tickets to Paris. However, the final selection of Indian male race walkers awaits the outcome of June’s national selection trials.
Boxing has seen four Indian pugilists securing spots for the Olympics, while Equestrian, Hockey, Rowing, and Sailing have also contributed to India’s quota tally.
Notably, Vishnu Saravanan and Nethra Kumanan secured quotas in sailing, with Kumanan securing hers at the Last Chance Regatta in the ILCA 6 category. Their achievements mark significant milestones in Indian sailing history.
Table Tennis witnessed historic qualification of both the men’s and women’s teams for the Olympics for the first time based on the latest World Rankings. Weightlifting saw Mirabai Chanu securing a quota spot, while Wrestling celebrated memorable victories as Vinesh Phogat, Anshu Malik, Reetika Hooda, and Antim Panghal secured their places for Paris.
These achievements underscore India’s growing prowess in the global sporting arena and set the stage for a promising performance at the Paris Olympics 2024. With athletes across diverse disciplines ready to showcase their talent on the world stage, anticipation and excitement for the upcoming event continue to soar.
