A senior US official remarked on Monday that the bilateral relationship between the United States and India has reached a milestone akin to achieving “escape velocity,” a term from space exploration signifying the momentum needed for a body to break free from gravitational pull.
Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell made these comments during an event at the Council on Foreign Relations, emphasizing the progress in US policy sustainability in the Indo-Pacific region. His statement follows a recent visit to India alongside National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, marking the first high-level trip by US officials to New Delhi during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term.
Campbell underscored the strategic importance of enhancing defense industrial cooperation between the US and India, particularly in areas such as jet engines and armored vehicles. He highlighted ongoing collaborations, including the joint production of GE’s F414 jet engine with HAL, announced during Prime Minister Modi’s visit last year.
Moreover, Campbell advocated for prioritizing the enrollment of Indian students in STEM fields at US universities over students from China, emphasizing trust and collaboration in high-technology sectors. He noted the significant presence of Indian students as the second-largest cohort of foreign students in the US, a vital component of bilateral people-to-people exchanges.
In recent years, the Biden administration has intensified engagement with India through platforms like the Quad with Australia and Japan, and initiatives such as AUKUS with Australia and the UK. These efforts reflect shared interests in managing regional challenges, particularly in response to China’s assertive actions in the Indo-Pacific.
Campbell’s remarks underscored a deepening partnership and mutual ambition in strategic cooperation, highlighting joint efforts in the Indian Ocean and other critical domains. The ongoing dialogue between Delhi and Washington aims to sustain and expand collaborative frameworks for regional stability and economic growth.
The event also addressed broader Indo-Pacific dynamics, affirming the United States’ commitment to strengthening ties with regional partners to address common challenges effectively.
