Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that India’s first indigenously developed semiconductor chip will be ready for production by 2025, marking a major milestone in the country’s technological advancement. Speaking via video conferencing at the Global Investors Summit 2025 in Bhopal, Vaishnaw highlighted India’s growing capabilities in semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, emphasizing the country’s rapid progress in this critical sector.
India’s Semiconductor Push and Manufacturing Expansion
The minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for accelerating India’s journey toward self-reliance in semiconductor technology. He also acknowledged Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s role in fostering industrial development in the state. Two major electronics manufacturing clusters have been approved in Madhya Pradesh—one in Bhopal and the other in Jabalpur—contributing to the state’s growing industrial ecosystem. Currently, 85 companies are actively engaged in electronics manufacturing in the state, reflecting its increasing importance in India’s technology landscape.
To strengthen India’s semiconductor industry, five manufacturing units are currently under construction, with the first batch of made-in-India chips expected to roll out by 2025. To support this expansion, the government has launched an initiative to train 85,000 engineers in advanced semiconductor and electronics manufacturing. Additionally, under the Future Skills Program, 20,000 engineers will be trained to enhance the skilled workforce needed for the sector’s growth.
Electronics Industry Growth and Export Boom
Over the past decade, India’s electronics manufacturing industry has expanded exponentially, reaching a valuation of ₹10 lakh crore. The country now exports electronics worth ₹5 lakh crore annually, with mobile phones alone accounting for ₹4 lakh crore. Other major exports include laptops, servers, telecom equipment, and defense and medical electronics, making electronics one of India’s top three export categories.
Madhya Pradesh’s electronics sector has received a further boost with the inauguration of its first information technology campus—a one lakh square feet facility dedicated to manufacturing IT hardware and electronic products like servers, desktops, motherboards, RAM, SSDs, drones, and robots. With an investment of ₹150 crore over the next six years, the facility will create employment for 1,200 professionals and manufacture desktop computers, all-in-one workstations, laptops, tablets, and monitors, further strengthening India’s global electronics footprint.
Sustainable Development and Industry Partnerships
On the opening day of the Global Investors Summit, the Indian Railways and the Madhya Pradesh government signed agreements on renewable energy projects, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable infrastructure development. The Narendra Modi government continues to focus on future-ready infrastructure, prioritizing investment, inclusive growth, manufacturing expansion, and legal simplifications to drive economic progress under the vision of a developed India by 2047.
