In a significant acknowledgment of bravery, commitment, and exceptional service, the Government of India will confer more than 1,000 medals across various categories to police, fire services, home guard, civil defence, and correctional services personnel during the Independence Day celebrations. The honours, announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs, are aimed at recognising acts of gallantry, distinguished service, and meritorious contributions in safeguarding the country’s law, order, and public safety. This year’s awards highlight the courage of those serving in high-risk areas, with Jammu and Kashmir securing the highest number of Gallantry Medals, followed by personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Border Security Force (BSF).
Recognition Across Police, Fire Services, Home Guard, and Civil Defence
According to the official announcement, a total of 1,090 medals will be presented this year, including 233 Gallantry Medals, 99 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service, and 758 Medals for Meritorious Service. These awards serve not only as symbols of personal honour but also as national gratitude towards those who display courage under fire, remain steadfast in challenging situations, and contribute tirelessly to public service. In the police category alone, 226 officers and personnel will be recognised with Gallantry Medals for their extraordinary courage and decisive actions in the line of duty. These medals are awarded to individuals who go beyond the call of duty, often placing themselves in life-threatening situations to protect others. Alongside them, 89 officers will be honoured with the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service, which acknowledges sustained and exceptional performance over an extended career. Additionally, 635 officers will receive the Medal for Meritorious Service, granted to those whose dedication, professionalism, and consistent efforts have significantly contributed to their field of service.
The list of Gallantry Medal recipients clearly reflects the ongoing challenges faced in conflict-prone regions, particularly Jammu and Kashmir, where personnel continue to confront security threats on a daily basis. Officers deployed in these areas frequently face hostile encounters, insurgent activities, and other high-risk situations that demand both quick thinking and immense bravery. The high representation of Jammu and Kashmir personnel among the awardees underscores the critical role they play in maintaining stability and security in one of the most sensitive regions of the country. The Central Reserve Police Force and the Border Security Force also feature prominently among the Gallantry Medal recipients. Both forces have long been at the forefront of India’s internal security and border protection, engaging in operations that often involve significant personal risk. The CRPF, in particular, has played a key role in counter-insurgency operations, while the BSF remains India’s first line of defence in safeguarding the nation’s borders against infiltration and cross-border threats.
Honouring Fire Services, Correctional Staff, and Civil Defence Personnel
The awards extend beyond the police forces, covering other essential services that contribute to the nation’s safety and resilience. In the fire services category, a total of 62 medals will be presented. These include six Gallantry Medals for acts of exceptional bravery in fire and rescue operations, five President’s Medals for Distinguished Service recognising a sustained record of exceptional performance, and 51 Medals for Meritorious Service to honour those who have consistently demonstrated dedication and expertise in their roles. Fire service personnel often work in extreme and hazardous conditions, battling not only flames but also collapsing structures, toxic fumes, and unpredictable emergencies, making their recognition a vital part of this national honours list.
The Home Guard and Civil Defence category will also be represented, with one Gallantry Medal being awarded for exceptional courage, three President’s Medals for Distinguished Service, and 41 Medals for Meritorious Service. These individuals, often working in voluntary or auxiliary capacities, play a crucial role in supporting regular security and emergency services. They assist during natural disasters, manage public safety during large gatherings, and provide critical support in emergencies, contributing significantly to community resilience. Correctional services personnel will also be acknowledged in this year’s honours. Two officers will be awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service for their long-standing and exceptional contributions to prison administration, rehabilitation programmes, and the maintenance of order within correctional facilities. An additional 31 officers will receive the Medal for Meritorious Service for their commitment to improving conditions, implementing reforms, and ensuring security within these institutions. The recognition of correctional staff serves as a reminder that the justice system’s effectiveness relies not only on law enforcement but also on the safe and humane management of those serving sentences.
