In the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2024, India has shown remarkable progress, with 69 universities securing positions among the top 500 globally. This marks a significant rise from the previous year, with 424 entries representing a 19.4% increase compared to 355 entries in the previous ranking.
What’s particularly noteworthy is that 72% of the Indian entries this year have either made their debut on the list, showcased improvement, or maintained their positions, indicating a positive trend in the country’s higher education sector. Overall, India has demonstrated a substantial 17% year-on-year improvement in the rankings.
A key contributor to India’s presence in the rankings is the presence of the 12 Institutes of Eminence (IoE), which constitute only a fraction of the country’s universities but contribute 40% of the total entries. These IoEs lead the way with 47 out of the 69 top-100 Indian positions across various academic disciplines.
Among the standout performers, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has emerged as India’s highest-ranked university, securing the 20th position globally in a new discipline. Additionally, IIM Ahmedabad and Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences have made significant strides, ranking 22nd and 24th globally, respectively.
Furthermore, IIT Guwahati has been recognized globally for its excellence in Data Science and Petroleum Engineering, securing rankings in the top 70 globally. Notably, several subjects at IIT Guwahati have witnessed improvements in their rankings this year.
Commenting on India’s educational landscape, Jessica Turner, CEO of QS, acknowledged the challenges faced by the country in providing high-quality tertiary education amidst increasing demand. However, she noted the positive trajectory reflected in the increased number of Indian programs featured across various subject rankings.
While acknowledging the need for further improvements in standards, access to higher education, digital readiness, and global competitiveness, Turner emphasized India’s significant steps in the right direction, indicating a promising future for the country’s higher education sector.
