India has firmly opposed China’s latest administrative maneuver in the Ladakh region and registered a strong diplomatic protest against it. The government informed Parliament on Friday that it has never accepted China’s illegal occupation of Indian territory and has reiterated its stance on the country’s sovereignty.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, in a written response to a Lok Sabha query, confirmed that India is aware of China’s establishment of two new counties in the Hotan prefecture, a part of which falls within India’s Union Territory of Ladakh. He emphasized that this move by China does not alter India’s long-standing position regarding its sovereignty over the region nor does it legitimize China’s illegal occupation.
The Indian government has conveyed its “solemn protest” through diplomatic channels, highlighting its firm opposition to such actions. The ministry was asked in Parliament about India’s awareness of China’s move and the strategic and diplomatic measures it has undertaken in response. Additionally, lawmakers sought details of India’s protests against these new counties and any responses received from China, as well as inquiries about the government’s long-term strategies to counter China’s increasing administrative and infrastructural expansion in the Aksai Chin region.
The government has confirmed that it is fully aware of China’s infrastructure development activities along the border. In response, India has been making significant investments in its own border infrastructure to facilitate economic growth in these remote areas and to strengthen its security preparedness.
Over the past decade (2014-2024), India has significantly increased its budget allocation for border infrastructure development. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has tripled its expenditure levels compared to the previous decade, leading to substantial expansion in road networks, bridges, and tunnels. These developments have not only improved connectivity for local populations but also enhanced logistical support for the armed forces deployed in the region.
The government emphasized that it remains vigilant about all developments affecting India’s security and territorial integrity. It continues to take all necessary measures to safeguard national sovereignty, ensuring that India’s position on the issue remains firm and consistent. The diplomatic protest against China’s administrative expansion in Ladakh underscores India’s commitment to protecting its territorial rights while strengthening infrastructure along the borders to counter any external threats effectively.
