India witnessed a surge in LPG cylinder refill bookings over the past few days, but the numbers have now started to decline following repeated assurances from the government about fuel availability. Official data shows that while approximately 88.8 lakh LPG cylinder refills were booked on Friday, the number dropped to around 77 lakh on Saturday. Authorities believe that the earlier rush to book cylinders was driven by public concerns related to developments in West Asia and fears about potential disruptions in fuel supply. However, government officials and oil companies have consistently stated that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG in the country and that supply chains remain stable. As a result, booking levels are now gradually returning to normal.
Decline in LPG bookings after government reassurance
The sharp increase in LPG refill bookings earlier in the week had raised concerns about panic buying among consumers. On Friday, bookings reached nearly 88.8 lakh, significantly higher than the typical daily average. Officials attributed this spike to uncertainty about the global energy situation and speculation regarding possible disruptions in fuel supply. To address these concerns, the government issued multiple statements emphasizing that India has sufficient fuel reserves and that domestic production remains strong. Oil companies also reassured consumers that supply chains are functioning normally and that there is no need to stockpile fuel. Following these assurances, the number of bookings declined to around 77 lakh on Saturday, indicating that consumer confidence is gradually being restored.
Surge in online LPG bookings across the country
Another notable trend during this period has been the growing preference for online LPG bookings. According to official data, nearly 87 percent of LPG cylinder bookings on Saturday were made through online platforms, compared to 84 percent on Friday. Oil marketing companies have been actively encouraging consumers to use digital platforms such as mobile apps and websites to book LPG refills. Online booking not only reduces crowding at gas agencies but also ensures a faster and more transparent distribution process. The government has been promoting digital services for several years, and the current trend suggests that more consumers are becoming comfortable with using technology for essential services.
Refineries operating at full capacity to ensure fuel availability
Authorities have also emphasized that India’s fuel supply infrastructure is functioning at full capacity. All refineries in the country are operating at maximum output to ensure adequate production of petrol, diesel, and LPG. Additionally, India maintains sufficient reserves of crude oil, which is the primary raw material used to produce these fuels. Officials have stated that the country is largely self-sufficient in producing petrol and diesel, reducing the need for large-scale imports. Oil companies have confirmed that no petrol pumps or LPG distribution centers have reported shortages. The continuous operation of refineries and the strong distribution network have ensured that fuel is reaching consumers without disruption.
Government prioritises households and essential services
To ensure that essential services remain unaffected, the government has prioritized the supply of LPG to households, hospitals, and educational institutions. Authorities have taken steps to regulate supply to industrial and commercial sectors so that domestic consumers receive adequate quantities of cooking gas. At the same time, sectors relying on piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) are continuing to receive uninterrupted supply. Officials have also announced that refineries are maximizing LPG production and adjusting booking intervals to ensure equitable distribution across the country.
Action against hoarding and illegal fuel sales
State governments have initiated enforcement measures to prevent hoarding and illegal resale of fuel. Inspections and raids have been conducted in several regions to ensure that petrol, diesel, and LPG are not being stockpiled for black market sales. Oil company officials are also monitoring gas agencies and fuel stations to ensure that operations remain smooth and transparent. Authorities have repeatedly urged citizens not to panic or purchase excess fuel because adequate supplies are available nationwide.
Monitoring global developments and assisting returning Indians
The government is also closely monitoring developments in West Asia and their potential impact on energy markets. In addition to managing domestic fuel supplies, authorities are assisting Indian citizens returning from the region. According to official data, around 1.94 lakh passengers have returned to India since February 28. The government has stated that it will continue to provide support and monitor the situation to ensure the safety of Indian nationals abroad.
