Navtej Sarna, former Indian Ambassador to Israel and the US, has emphasized the need for India to actively contribute to restoring peace in the Middle East. Navtej Sarna’s remarks come amid ongoing violence in Gaza and significant international scrutiny of Israel’s actions. He asserts that India’s role in maintaining open channels and fostering dialogue is crucial as the conflict evolves.

Navtej Sarna reflects on the current state of the Gaza conflict, noting that the situation remains dire with no immediate resolution in sight. He highlights the maximalist approach of Israel, which aims to dismantle Hamas completely. However, this strategy has resulted in extensive casualties, including a high number of civilian deaths, and ongoing disagreements within the Israeli government regarding the endgame of the conflict. Navtej Sarna points out that while some Israeli officials advocate for a ceasefire, the lack of consensus complicates the prospects for peace.

Hamas, a long-standing Islamist resistance group, has been a central player in the conflict. Established in the 1980s, Hamas has both political and military wings and has historically received funding from various sources, including Iran and Qatar. Navtej Sarna notes that the group’s recent actions and attacks are partly a response to what they perceive as failures of the Palestinian Authority and provocations from Israel’s right-wing government.

The international response to the conflict has been polarized. While the brutal nature of the attacks has generated significant sympathy for Israel, the extensive bombing campaign in Gaza has led to criticism and a reevaluation of support for Israel in various parts of the world. Navtej Sarna highlights the backlash Israel has faced, including diplomatic setbacks and accusations of potential violations of international law.

Navtej Sarna also touches upon the future of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting that his political career may be jeopardized by the ongoing conflict and legal issues. Netanyahu’s reluctance to pursue a ceasefire is viewed as a tactic to maintain his political standing amid the turmoil.

Regarding India’s role, Navtej Sarna stresses the importance of stabilizing the region for broader geopolitical reasons. Instability in the Middle East has direct implications for India, particularly concerning energy security and regional alliances. Navtej Sarna advocates for India to remain engaged in diplomatic efforts to support peace and security in the region.

On the international stage, US President Joe Biden’s strong support for Israel has faced scrutiny as the civilian toll in Gaza rises. Navtej Sarna notes the potential impact of future US leadership on the conflict’s trajectory, with possible shifts depending on whether Donald Trump or Biden remains in office.

The prospect of a two-state solution, long a cornerstone of peace efforts, appears increasingly remote. Navtej Sarna reflects on historical attempts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, highlighting that despite years of negotiations and proposals, substantial obstacles remain. The current political climate, both in Israel and among the Palestinians, complicates the realization of this solution.

Navtej Sarna’s insights underscore the complexity of the Middle East conflict and the pivotal role that global and regional powers, including India, must play in pursuing lasting peace and stability.
