India has achieved notable success on Netflix, emerging as the third country in revenue percent growth for the streaming service in the second quarter of 2024. This rise is attributed to the significant popularity of Indian content alongside international hits.
According to Netflix’s Q2 earnings report released on Thursday, the surge in revenue growth can be traced to popular Indian titles like “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” “The Great Indian Kapil Show,” and “Amar Singh Chamkila.” These titles have contributed substantially to Netflix’s performance in the region. “Heeramandi,” directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, has particularly stood out, garnering 15 million views and becoming Netflix’s most-watched Indian drama series.
The biopic “Amar Singh Chamkila,” directed by Imtiaz Ali, also achieved significant viewership with 8.3 million views. Other notable successes include Kiran Rao’s “Laapataa Ladies” and Ajay Devgn-starrer horror drama “Shaitaan.” The impressive performance of these Indian titles highlights the growing influence and popularity of Indian content on the global streaming platform.
In addition to Indian content, Netflix’s Q2 report highlighted the success of international shows such as “Bridgerton 3,” “Baby Reindeer,” and the Korean drama “Queen of Tears.” The UK also had a strong showing, with “Baby Reindeer” earning 11 Emmy nominations and amassing 88.4 million views.
Looking ahead, Netflix’s lineup for India in 2024 includes anticipated non-fiction content like “Modern Masters feat. SS Rajamouli,” “Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairy Tale,” and “Yo Yo Honey Singh.” Fictional highlights include returning seasons of popular series such as “Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein” and “The Great Indian Kapil Show,” as well as new projects like Anubhav Sinha’s “IC814: The Kandahar Hijack” and “Vijay 69.”
India’s growing prominence on Netflix underscores the country’s expanding role in the global streaming market, reflecting the increasing global appeal of Indian entertainment content.
